Reiss (1838-1908), a geologist, and Stübel (1835-1904), a volcanologist, were both from Germany. They came to the Americas to conduct geological research in Colombia and Ecuador; they also conducted anthropological, meteorological, & zoological research. While on the Peruvian coast, they conducted archaeological excavations at Ancon, where the climate had aided the preservation of textiles & other organic material.
The volumes are illustrated with chromolithographs by Wilhelm Greve.
The Dumbarton Oaks volumes include book labels of Clarence H. Clark.
